The Golden Oasis

Everything you see there is natural. It must be one of the most beautiful places in the world especially at the sunset time. Sleeping under the stars or just relaxing between the high palm-trees is a kind of integration with the environment. The first time  I sew the oasis of El Kharga there was a bright light on my eyes ,I could not overcome the emotion even I wondered “ what better place to go than El Kharga Oasis ? It is a green island in the middle of a yellow ocean of sand . During my short stay in that splendid place I realized that I did not look at my watch as I usually do in Cairo since it seemed that everything there went out of time. There, I was walking longer than I really do in the city. That fantastic pure atmosphere encouraged me to discover what is around even I was feeling less tired than before .No doubt those days in that wonderful place was a kind of recuperation from the gloomy crowded life of the Egyptian capital . Everything around me was clean, quit and simple even  for a moment It was turning in my mind the idea of buying a house there.

El Kharga is about 550 km far from Cairo, It is nearer to Luxor than any other Egyptian town , It is a unique natural depression in the western desert. It was called during the ancient Egyptian time the Oasis of Thebes. It contains several monumental sites, the most important one is the temple of Hebes , 3 km to the North of the oasis . It was dedicated for the worshipping of the triad of Thebes, Amon, Mut and Khonso ,and dates back to the time of the 26th dynasty. Also one of the interesting monuments in the area is El Zayan temple  which situated near the small village of Kassr Zayan and dates back to the Ptolemaic period . It was dedicated for the cult of Amon-Re the lord of El Kharga at that time. Another place which deserves the visit is the cemetery of El Bagawat behind the temple of Hebes, these tombs date back to the Early Christian Period , on the walls of which some very interesting colored religious

Scenes were depicted such as the Exodus , Adam, Eve, various prophets, angles, the Virgin Mary and Jesus .

The oasis of El Kharga was a prosperous place during the ancient times, it was linked with the Nile valley by some routes. The Greek historian Herodotus mentioned that the Persian great king Campuses sent  a huge army ( about 50000 men) from Thebes in order to destroy the oracle temple of Amon -Zeus at Siwah. The huge army reached the oasis of El Kharga to be provided with water and food , then they marched towards Siwah but the campaign was vanished and no one  till now can tell what really happened , some historians suggested that the Persian army was lost in the desert and was sunken in the Great Sea Of Sand which extends along the borders between  Egypt and Libya.

Nowadays El Khraga is famous of a large number of palm-trees , pigeon-houses , farms , fields , monuments, wells, honey-colour hills, artisans and traditional handcrafts .There was another enjoyment: riding Camels , which is considered for many tourists and visitors an adventure in it self . On the rocks of some sites some graffiti made by tourists had left to commemorate their visit to that beautiful oasis. Pure springs and natural wells completely unadulterated by chlorine , pollution or other chemicals scattered in several locations of the oasis. The local people seemed to be “at your service ” , they are kind and the visitors feel that they are very welcomed . The life there is simple but extremely satisfying the little necessities of its people , of course there is no sophisticated communication means but who needs technology there any way ?

On the other hand the oasis suffers from the carelessness in many sectors, it lacks of many fundamental services and needs
